On February 7, 2020 at 7pm started the Annual Student Dance Concert at Franklin High School. As students stretched, warmed up, practiced and shook their nerves, the show was on it’s way to finally beginning. People started filling in the seats in the auditorium as the lights went off, the music started, and the dances began.
Before the night even began, Cydney Wallace had a bit to say about her group dance piece “Blank Page”, along with Arianna Richards, Amanda Carter, Brianna Richards and Jessica Bosompem (Grade 12); “Not take things too serious, be yourself, and to disregard other people’s opinions on you”. Wallace also described her experience here in the Dance Program at Franklin High School in her last four years of being here, “I’ve constantly been pushed to being creative, to being inspired to be creative, and people surrounding are extremely talented and inspire her”. Wallace’s group dance along with two other pieces will be in Teen Arts, “Unravel Me” by Amanda Drayton and Matthew Furlong (12th grade) (involves a rope), and lastly “Untitled” by Michael Koutros (10th grade), and many others have been recommended to attend this festival as well as others.
“You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls, and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive” Merce Cunningham.
Ms. Della Serra opened the show presenting that inspiring quote to the audience. This quote symbolizes that everyone needs art in their life to bring their creativity to life. While talking to Ms. Della Serra before the showcase she stated “I’m super excited and a bit nervous, so much energy around the performers for the night!"
Both, Ms. Della Serra and Ms. Rivera were extremely excited for the result; new lights add a level of sophistication, and bring creativity more to life.
Every student who performed at the Student Dance Showcase did a phenomenal job on bringing out the diversity in the styles of the pieces!
