National Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15. To celebrate the culture of our diverse student body, not only did FHS host multiple Hispanic Heritage Month assemblies but students and teachers also participated in multiple smaller events throughout the month. The events were organized by Ms. Guerrero, Ms. Santiago, our librarian, and Ms. Sanabria, one of our Spanish teachers.

One of the more popular events was a “Taste of Our Culture” day. Students and staff were able to bring Hispanic dishes for people to try during the lunch block in the library. During lunches students also participated in games commonly played amongst the Hispanic community. There was Loteria, Bingo, and Hispanic history trivia. For each question answered correctly during the trivia Hispanic candy was given out as a prize. On Fridays, volunteers played music in the events lobby during the lunch block. Students danced as the hispanic classics, and recently trending songs played.

The assemblies were from October 9-12, each grade level had their own assembly. The assemblies had multiple dances such as folclorico, huapango, bachata, salsa, and dembow. The assemblies included multiple performances of popular songs including “Vi- vir Mi Vida” by Marc Anthony, famous Puerto Rican singer. During the shows, poems and literary works were read, to which the crowd responded amazingly. There was consistently loud cheering and support for all the students per- forming.

The events were volunteer based. Students either met with Ms. Santiago in the library, or joined the Google Classroom, and virtual meetings.
