As February came to an end, FHS students geared up to put on the annual Black History Month Assembly. Students came together to put on performances to promote this year’s theme of “Black Art” through singing, slam poetry, dances, fashion, and even a wax museum. The assembly was held in February 2024 and was watched by all grade levels.

FHS Senior and president of BYA, Hameeda Sarpong, participated in this year’s assembly as both an announcer and stage hand. She commented on the assembly, saying, “It’s important to have the assembly to show people the various different types of arts that are in the African Diaspora. As a first generation Ghanaian-American, I really loved the African fashion show because it really reminded me of my ethnic background and where I’m from.” Not only was this touching for Hameeda, but her response shows how important it is to hold these annual cultural assemblies.

FHS is very culturally diverse and made up of all walks of life. The American Psychological Association states, “Representation of diverse communities can increase social connection, belonging and community support.” Through the assembly, students were able to see their cultures represented, and students who aren’t African-American were able to learn more and experience a different culture. The poems and performances not only celebrated the beauty in the different cultures within the black community but also presented and shed light on current problems within the black community. FHS senior Katheirne Hernandez states, “Even though it’s not my culture, I liked seeing the different countries and had a lot

of fun.”

As Seniors leave, a new class comes in that gets to experience the annual assembly, which in turn creates traditions and a perfect way to pass on the baton. In the end, the assembly was a great way for students to receive a break from their busy school life and experience fun performances put on by fellow students.
