As much as we would all hope for it, a white Christmas is unlikely in Franklin this year due to the warmer climate and rainy conditions forecasted for the day. The situation has many factors, with the overall reports pointing to no snow. This year, it’s been documented that the eastern region of the United States has experienced much warmer temperatures than prior. Now this doesn’t stop the precipitation from occurring; however, this comes in more of a wetter type (prepare for wet and slow roads ahead).

While this very much stems from general weather patterns, an overarching factor of global climate change also plays a role. According to NASA, “Summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest since global records began in 1880”. This data was found utilizing NASA’s temperature record, which recorded surface air conditions from across the globe to make such a weighty claim.

The main system measures anomalies in the temperature in fact, with a “temperature anomaly show[ing] how far the temperature has departed from 1951 to 1980.”

What this means for New Jersey residents is very little snow throughout December as a whole, with only one day forecasted currently with 0.04 inches predicted. On the flip side, “three to eight days of rain” have been forecasted as well, with December 25th in itself being on the cloudy side.

The low possibility of a white Christmas is disheartening; however, the global climate is much more pressing. If things don’t change soon, the chances of seeing a white Christmas in Franklin are slim, even more so, though it’s never zero.

The best thing to do at the moment is to stay informed and stay up to date with the latest climate and weather news. In this case, then, if things do turn around, the excitement of a white Christmas may be felt once more.

‘Till then have a happy holiday with wishes to the white blanketing festivities for one day again!
