FHS Annual Food Drive Supports Local Families

Written by: Malissa Mohabir

Organized by Ms. Lozano, the Franklin High School Food Drive took place in the FHS Front Lobby. Students and staff dropped off unopened and unexpired items such as rice, pasta, canned vegetables, snacks, cereal, and shelf-stable milk. With grocery prices rising and the holiday season approaching, the school hoped everyone could come together to donate whatever they could.

Food insecurity had become more common in many communities, including Franklin Township, due to economic challenges and rising costs. According to Ms. Lozano, “The food drive really supports families in our own community. Even one item can make a difference.” By collecting non-perishable items, the drive supported local families while encouraging students to practice empathy and community responsibility.

However, even positive efforts came with challenges. Some students said that many families wanted to donate but could not always afford to contribute, while others argued that small donations still mattered and added up over time. One FHS junior explained, “Honestly, I didn’t know how many people in Franklin deal with food insecurity. Once I learned about it, I felt like we should help however we can.” As one senior added, “A lot of students want to donate, but money can be tight. I think the school should remind everyone that even one snack or one can still helps a lot.”

In the end, the FHS Food Drive highlighted how small acts of kindness could create a big impact. Whether someone donated a full bag of groceries or a single item, every contribution supported a family in Franklin Township. The event strengthened the community and reminded students that helping others was a meaningful part of being at Franklin High School.
