Onassis de Freitas reports on the FHS mid-year pep rally and the various events that took place.

FHS hosted its annual midyear pep rally for all of its staff, teachers, and students on Febru-
ary 16, 2024 Neon was this year’s theme and students did not come to play. Every grade arrived in the color that they were assigned to. Seniors dressed in their traditional pink, the juniors in blue, the sophomores in red, and the freshman wore purple! Students spent their lunches getting ready with face paint , glitter, and face jewels by their fellow classmates. Before the pep rally, students from every grade level created posters to see who could showcase their greatest work.

The national anthem, performed by the gifted Teya Wright kicked off the event as usual. Then, the FHS Dance Team and the FHS Cheer Team wowed the crowd with amazing performances that never failed to entertain. The dance team returned for another performance during the pep rally, this time sporting their FHS color uniforms. That was only the beginning of the endless games our winter sports teams played: basketball, track and field, bowling, wrestling, musical chairs, shooting ten basketballs in thirty seconds, cup games, tug a war, competitions between the boys’ and girls’ track teams, competitive swimming teams, balloon popping, and more. We watched students from all grade levels show up and play in these games alongside the teachers. One of the girls' swim team captains, senior Alex Gregorio, was asked what she liked best about the pep rally. “I definitely liked this pep rally more than the fall one, and it was surprising to see my forensics teacher, Ms. Myers, win the teacher-student shooting competition,” she remarked. Another student, Cheyenne Lasch, was asked the same question and stated, “The thing I liked most were probably the dances. I feel like the dances brought up the energy.“

Joel Garces, a junior who doubles as a DJ, never failed to get the crowd going with his selection of music, particularly during the dance competition between students from every grade level featuring the popular tik tok song "Just wanna rock" by Lil Uzi Vert, in which students participated in from each corner of the gym. One student, Hassan Kamara, emerged as the winner, outperforming the rest. FHS students were in high spirits as they exited the gym on both sides, discussing the date of the spring pep rally, only moments after the pep rally had concluded with the song "Love" by Keisha Cole.
