Kerrigan Peterson gives insight into the latest Sony superhero film.

Sony brings yet another storyline into the Marvel Universe with the release of their new movie, Madame Web. Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, focuses on Cassandra Webb, a Paramedic. Similar to the rest of the Spider-Man movies, the film takes place in New York, but puts a spin on the lead character’s powers, because unlike the others, Cassandra Webb is clairvoyant. The movie releases in theaters on February 14th, making the date more than just Valentine's Day. The timing of the release is especially remarkable, given the number of Spider-Man fans.
Besides being entertaining, the movie has a new purpose: Valentine’s Day Dates. Freshman Anderson Najera says, “Spider-Man is a cute thing for Valentine’s Day because Spider-Man always protects his girl, so if you’re a girl or a boy, anything with Spider-Man tells them that you’re always gonna be there to protect them and their feelings.” Not only would a movie date be cute, but the meaning behind a Spider-Man movie (not just for entertainment) is especially important.
Other than Valentine’s Day, Marvel fans are also focusing on the plot contributions Madame Web will have to the Spider-Verse. Before the movie, she had made a brief cameo under the name “C. Weber” in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). However, this is the first time she has been featured, which emerges as an entirely new storyline.
