My name is Isaiah Mosley-Aviles, and I have served as the newspaper club editor-in-chief for this past school year. I wanted to share my experience with the club and hopefully inspire many of you to continue and get excited about what’s to come.

In my freshman year of high school, my dream job was to become a writer. Up to that point, I had written a full novel as well as many short stories. As a freshman, I was eager to write even more. I went to my guidance counselor and asked for a list of all the writing clubs at FHS. The Newspaper Club was at the top of that list.

The first article I wrote was in March 2022 and was about the newest movie to hit theaters, The Batman. I remember how much fun I had writing in this new style, using a lead, body and tail. I would set my eyes on a much more ambitious project to next. That was tackling the Somerset Youth Center’s grand opening. It was exhilarating going there and standing among the adult reporters of Franklin. I did exactly what they were, interviewing attendants, taking notes on the speeches, and capturing images to showcase the center. I was hooked on journalism by that point and was excited to begin the next year.
My sophomore year I would begin to churn out more articles, my favorite of which being the FBLA talent show, where I got to conduct one-to-one interviews with attendees and document the amazing talent showcased right at our school. On top of that, I would come to enjoy reporting on world news, diving into changing political climates, as well as changing crises across the globe.

In my junior year, I knew I wanted to do more for the club. So I applied and was given the position of copy editor. As the Copy Editor, I helped organize the leaders of the club to aid them in publishing articles online. Most notably, I helped create meeting slide presentations, highlighting what I enjoy most about the club, the conversations we had. However, unfortunately, due to events taking place in my personal life, I was unable to finish out the year as strongly as I aimed to.
Nevertheless, I didn’t let that deter me from jumping right back in my senior year. This time, I would go on to apply for the role I have today, as Editor-in-Chief. From managing the club rush to doubling down on fun activities, expanding the reach with a newspaper club shirt, and promoting the club using flyers. I did my best to ensure the club was moving along at an exciting pace. My year as Editor-in-Chief was spent working as much as I could to elevate the club’s position and make it the best it could be.
Ultimately, there were some things that I wish I could have still done, like organizing more events with other clubs, finding more ways to promote the club, and becoming more accessible for members who weren’t able to attend every meeting. Alas, these are goals for the future years, and I’m sure whoever assumes my position will do a wonderful job of striving to meet what’s laid out next for this club.

All in all, I’ve found so much enjoyment out of being a part of the newspaper club, and I’m honored to have served as Editor-in-Chief. I hope to join the newspaper at Case Western Reserve University as well and continue to take my experience I have garnered at Franklin to the next level. In the end, I’ll always look back upon my time here with a smile for the people I’ve been able to connect with, who will forever remain in my heart. I wish everyone the best, and remember…
Stay curious!
