The Marvels was the 33rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring actresses Brie Larson and Wandavision’s Teyonah Parris. It will be part of Phase Five after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. To defeat the Supreme Intelligence, she joins forces with two other superheroes who relentlessly stop at nothing to defeat Dar-Benn and her army.

Over a remarkable 15-year span, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently produced 32 consecutive blockbusters, setting an unparalleled standard in franchise entertainment. This extraordinary achievement has propelled the company to a staggering

$30 billion in global earnings. However, with a $220 million budget, “The Marvels,” the 33rd MCU installment, suffered a dismal opening, earning a measly $47 million in North America and $63 million internationally, which marked the lowest open weekend earnings in the franchise’s history.

The movie featured Academy Award winner Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, alongside Park Seo-joon, Teyonah Parris, and emerging talent Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, but these actors weren’t able to promote the film because of the SAG strike, which undoubtedly contributed to the movie’s downfall. Analysts, however, expected only a slight dip in ticket sales, not a staggering $100 million difference.

Another reason why the movie may have faced harsh criticism may be because of its lackluster plot development; an excessively long musical segment, which was more distracting, rather than entertaining, and not at all related to the main plot of the movie, and a disappointing villain arc.
