Top 5 Movies To Watch This Thanksgiving

Written by: Angelise Hernandez

Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to get together at home with family, friends and indulge in delicious meals. This November, why not add some cozy movies to your holiday traditions? They can bring connection, laughter and can be an extra form of entertainment while waiting on a Thanksgiving feast.

To get you started, here are my Top 5 holiday movies to watch:

5. ‘Addams Family Values' (1993)

Overview of the movie: “In this sequel, the Addams family members are up to further horrific antics. During this time, Gomez Addams and Morticia, his wife, are honoring and celebrating the arrival of their baby boy. Although the older siblings, Wednesday and Pugsley, aren't very happy about their new sibling, and try their best to get rid of the infant. When Debbie, the nanny, keeps the kids under control, her presence steers to an unexpected traitorous twist.”

This movie can be labeled as horror, dark comedy, family film and drama. While it isn’t necessarily a Thanksgiving movie, a large chunk of the second half of the film features the Addams kids at summer camp, performing the historical myth of the First Thanksgiving. Overall, it’s great to watch with your family.

4. ‘When Harry Met Sally...’ (1989)

If you’re more of a rom-com lover, consider watching, or rewatching, this classic film! Starring Billy Crystal (Harry) and Meg Ryan (Sally), the movie falls into romantic comedy, drama, and melodrama. Although Thanksgiving is not featured, it is associated during fall, which can give a feeling of the holiday.

Overview of the movie: “In 1977, college graduates, Harry Burns and Sally Albright, share a controversial car ride from Chicago to New York. In which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends.Ten years later, the two meet again at a bookstore, and in the company of their best friends, Jess and Marie, attempt to stay friends without their different genders becoming an issue between them.”

3. Garfield’s Thanksgiving (1989)

This Thanksgiving film’s genre is family comedy and animation. Garfield is an overall classic, so it’s a must-watch with your family.

Overview: “Garfield's Thanksgiving is a 1989 American animated television special based on the Garfield comic strip. It once again featured Lorenzo Music as the voice of Garfield." The special was first broadcast on November 22, 1989, on CBS and was nominated for Outstanding Animated Program at the 42nd Primetime Emmy Awards

2. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

An overview of the movie: “After 12 years of bucolic bliss, Mr. Fox (George Clooney) breaks a promise to his wife (Meryl Streep) and raids the farms of their human neighbors, Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the farmers force Mr. Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition.”

Fantastic Mr Fox is a well-known film during the fall. The movie’s themes express family, togetherness and gratitude, similar to obvious themes in Thanksgiving. The movie includes genres such as animation, teen, action and drama.  (add in interview)

1. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)

Coming in at Number 1 is “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”. This movie is a classic must-watch and by far one of the most popular and well-known films during Thanksgiving.

An Overview: “Peppermint Patty invites everyone to Charlie Brown's for Thanksgiving, even though he's going to see his grandmother; Snoopy decides to cook his own version of a Thanksgiving meal with help from his friends.”

This concludes the top 5 movies to watch this Thanksgiving. But there are many more fantastic movies to choose from!  What will you be watching in honor of Thanksgiving?
