Journalist Zarifa Mammmadli explains state testing policies.

State testing, including the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) and New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA), evaluates student proficiency and school performance. Initiated in the 3rd grade, these mandatory evaluations persist through
the 9th grade, with the NJGPA specifically administered in 11th grade to ascertain graduation readiness. In the spring of 2024, 52.2% of New Jersey students met proficiency standards in English Language Arts (ELA), and 39.6% in math. Graduation readiness was reported at 55% for 11th graders in math and 82% in ELA. Despite slight improvements, proficiency has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

To graduate, 11th graders must score at least 725 on the NJGPA. If a student does not pass, there are other alternative assessments available. To improve, students should use practice books, attend review sessions, and seek teacher support in areas of difficulty. Similarly with the NJSLA, while there is no need to stress as it will not affect a student’s Genesis grade, each student should put forth his or her best effort, as it directly impacts graduation status and our school’s future funding.
