October is Depression Awareness Month

Journalist Gabriella Mais spreads information about depression and how to help

October marks National Depression Education and Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for depression. Throughout the month, mental health organizations, medical professionals, and advocates will work together to educate the public on how depression affects individuals, why it is important to seek help, when early intervention can make a difference, and where to access resources. This initiative aims to combat stigma and ensure more people know what to do when faced with this serious mental health condition. Schools can play a pivotal role in this

process because they are not just educational institutions but also environments where students spend a significant portion of their day. Incorporating National Depression and Mental Health Awareness Month into the school setting could help students, teachers, and the overall community. Incorporating lessons on mental health into the curriculum can help students understand the seriousness of depression, learn how to support peers, and develop resilience against stress and anxiety. Incorporating National Depression and Mental Health Month into schools offers an opportunity to equip students, staff, and families with the tools they need to address mental health in proactive and compassionate ways. Schools contribute to the broader effort of supporting mental well-being and ensuring that students thrive both academically and emotionally.
