Franklin High School begins a new chapter as Genesi Miles steps into the role of principal, vacated by now Director of School Management Dr. Nicholas Solomon. The new principal aims to use her experience in leadership and education to bring fresh ideas to our school community.
Before joining FHS, Ms. Miles was the principal of Pine Grove Manor Elementary School for about three years. Prior to that position, she was a vice principal here at FHS for the Class of 2025. She also held roles such as vice principal of Hillcrest Elementary School and the Road to Success Alternative Program from 2020-2021. Before working as a school administrator, Mrs. Miles was an elementary school teacher in New Brunswick Public Schools. Her wide range of experience is sure to help her in her new endeavors at Franklin High School.
When asked about what motivated her to follow her path in the field of education, she stated, “I’ve always had a passion for teaching, and when I was teaching, I had a lot of female and Latina role models, and that’s what guided me to follow the path of school administration.”
Principal Miles highlighted her long-term plans for the school to increase participation in extracurricular and scholarly activities—not just in the loud minority, but in the silent majority of students. Her plans to do this focus on catering to the individual interests of the students.
She stated, “We have many students who are tuned in to academic clubs, theater, sports, JROTC—and those students are good, but from my short time at FHS, it’s clear that there are a bunch of students who don’t seem to have anything like that—and those are the students we have to reach out to.”
In addition to her academic goals, Principal Miles also wants to address problems facing students, particularly the vaping crisis. She acknowledged that while disciplinary measures could be taken, her approach will be to focus on educational and preventative measures in order to reach out to the general student body.
“The marketing of these [vaping] companies feeds off the temporary pleasure that kids like to feel,” Miles stated. “And what we have to do, apart from setting strict rules, is bring people who have personal experience with vaping to spread awareness.”
As the school year winds down and a new one approaches, students and staff can be sure that they have an approachable and determined leader. With clear goals and a student-friendly mindset, Principal Miles is ready to help Franklin grow.
